The 2010 Bugatti C 16 Galibier

>> Sunday, April 11, 2010

Review from:http://www.topspeed.com/cars/bugatti/index21.html, told us the history of the 2010 Bugatti 16 C Galibier, below is the review:
This past March at the Geneva Motor Show, the Swedish super car company Keonigsegg revealed the NLV Quant electric sedan. Well now it is the exotic Italian coachbuilder Bugatti’s turn, and Ettore’s original brand has done quite an impressive job on the all new Bugatti 16 C Galibier concept that was unveiled this past weekend in Molsheim. According to the automaker the upcoming super car will become "the most exclusive, elegant, and powerful four door automobile in the world."

The Galibier’s design is based on the Bugatti Type 35, a model that also inspired the 1001 HP Bugatti Veyron super car. The 16 C concept features the traditional Bugatti radiator complimented by big round LED lit headlamps and the clamshell running the length of the vehicle which became synonymous with the brand identity under Jean Bugatti in the Type 57.

Under the bonnet, the 16 C concept can stand up to the almighty Veyron, becasue Bugatti has placed a 8.0 Liter 16 cylinder engine boosted with a two stage supercharging system, that features an ethanol mode. The Galiber was designed with smooth lines that will allow it to slipstream past the competition should it ever go into production. The concept also features a four wheel drive, a purpose built performance suspension and very exotic ceramic brakes to ensure that the 16 C Galiber can handle the speeds the pair of blowers up front are going to generate.

The interior of the 16 C Galiber concept reflects the pure and simple design of the exterior, because after all there is something beautiful about being basic. The dash been reduced to include only the essential. Two centrally located dials keep even the rear passengers up to speed about the details of their experience. There is even an Aston Martin rivaling timepiece that has been integrated into the super car concept. Parmigiani, the Swiss maker of fine watches, created the removable Reverso Tourbillon clock for the Galibier, which may be worn on the wrist thanks to a cleverly designed leather strap.

We can know more from http://www.carsmagz.com/2010-bugatti-galibier-concept, that the new concept car is the Bugatti Galibier large grille design with Bugatti, Bugatti run large, round headlamps and LED Bugatti grabs. Find the sleek design, it is very interesting. Even using the Galibier Bugatti concept car engine, complemented by 16-cylinder, 8-liter engine with two-stage supercharging. Combination of art-design concept with Bugatti Galibier unusually rigid, but is also extremely light. And the wings and doors are made of aluminum.

The culmination of its centenary of ceremonies, presented Bugatti Automobiles SAS customers and opinion leaders of the Galibier Bugatti concept in the most exclusive, elegant and powerful car with four doors in the world last weekend in Molsheim are intended. At the historical site, where Ettore Bugatti once laid the groundwork for his company, Bugatti’s current president, Dr.-Ing. Franz-Josef Paefgen said that the Bugatti 16C Galibier is one of the studies, which draws the concept of the company concerned, the future of the brand Bugatti.

Art – molds – Engineering: these are the brand values that Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean-around more powerful engines and more precious body design for each new model that are unparalleled in quality-oriented, treatment, accelerating the development and refinement. In the process, she experimented again and again with new material without compromise, “said one of the first Bugatti manufacturer of aluminum parts for tools, machines and wheels used.

Art – molds – Engineering is the brand values that guided the design and engineering team of Bugatti Automobiles SAS in the development of the Bugatti Galibier. The new four-door concept car, Bugatti again takes a leading role in the use of new combinations of materials. The body is handmade from carbon parts dark blue color, so that when the lighting, the web structure shines through remarkably. Carbon is not only exceptionally rigid, but is also extremely light. The wings and doors are made of polished aluminum.

The review from http://www.bugattigalibier.us told us,after Bugatti unleashed their multi-million dollar W16 quad-turbo 1001hp Veyron, many gearheads wondered what possibly could Bugatti have up their sleeves next. Well… your answer is named Galibier. After a long period of teasers and speculation, Bugatti has finally taken the cloth off of their follow up to the supermanesque Veyron.
The new Bugatti Galibier, which was previously reffered to as the Bordeaux, is a four-door supercar concept that shares the same powerplant as it’s counterpart Veyron. The Galibier is absolutely stunning, it carries some design cues from the Veyron but the materials used here are a bit more elegant and tasteful. Not to discount the Veyron in any way, but the dark blue carbon fiber weave is like nothing I have ever seen before. The polished aluminum shell over the doors and fenders that greets the blue carbon fiber is an absolutely stunning combination. The W16, unlike the Veyron, is mounted up front and redesigned to run off optional ethanol fuel. Bugatti claims a top speed of 217 mph for the Galibier, a bit shy of the Veyron’s top speed but you show me a four-door sedan capable of 200+ mph!! More details are to be revealed during the Frankfurt Autoshow.

This year is an important one for Bugatti. Not only does 2009 represent the centenary of the legendary marque but it also now marks the unveiling of a super sedan that may constitute the future plans of the company. One hundred years to the month since the company was founded by Ettore Bugatti, we now have our first look at Bugatti’s latest concept: the 2009 Bugatti Galibier 16C.
Speaking previously, Bugatti chief Franz-Josef Paefgen revealed that there are in fact three proposed designs for the next-gen Bugatti. This news mates well with what Bugatti officials told TheCarConnection in July, which is that the Galibier 16C is in fact a design model being shown to clients and dealers.

According to a new report, the concept may go into production once the run of Veyron’s have come to an end, expected to be sometime in 2012.
The Galibier 16C is constructed from a mix of aluminum and carbon-fiber, which will ensure that it is the lightest car in its class. The body itself is made of polished aluminum and dark blue carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), and LED lights flank each end.

Another review From http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z14732/Bugatti-16-C-Galibier-Concept.aspx, descripting that,as the climax of its centenary celebration ceremonies, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. presented customers and opinion-makers with the Bugatti 16 C Galibier concept, intended to be the most exclusive, elegant, and powerful four door automobile in the world last weekend in Molsheim. At the historic site where Ettore Bugatti once laid the cornerstone of his company, Bugatti's current president, Dr. Ing. Franz-Josef Paefgen emphasised that the Galibier is one of several concept studies with which the company is considering for the future of the Bugatti marque.

Art - Form - Technique: those are the brand values to which Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean oriented themselves in order to develop even more powerful engines and even more noble body designs for each new model, which were without equal in quality, handling, speed and elegance. In the process, they experimented again and again without compromise with new materials; thus was Bugatti one of the first manufacturers to use aluminium parts for bodies, engine blocks and wheels.

Art - Form - Technique are also the brand values to which the design and engineering team of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. oriented themselves in the development of the Galibier. With this new four-door concept car, Bugatti assumes anew a leading role in the use of new material combinations. Thus the body is constructed of handmade carbon fibre parts coloured dark blue so that, when illuminated, the woven structure shimmers through strikingly. Carbon fibre not only possesses unusually great rigidity but is also especially light. The wings and doors are out of polished aluminium.

The Galibier's design masters the challenge of uniting sportiness with the comfort and elegance of a modern four-door saloon. The basic architecture picks up on the torpedo-like character of the Type 35, which was already revived in the Veyron, and reinterprets it. With the typical Bugatti radiator grille, big round LED headlights and the clamshell running the length of the vehicle which became synonymous with the brand identity under Jean Bugatti in the Type 57, this car transports the Bugatti genes into the modern world.

Beneath the bonnet, which folds back from both sides, there resides a 16-cylinder, 8-litre engine with two stage supercharging. What makes this engine special is that it was developed as a flex-fuel engine and can optionally be run on ethanol. Four-wheel drive specially developed ceramic brakes and a new suspension design enable the agile, always-sure handling of a saloon of this size.

The interior reflects the elemental design of the exterior. The dash panel has been reduced to the essential; two centrally located main instruments keep even the rear passengers constantly informed of the actual speed and previous performance Parmigiani, the Swiss maker of fine watches, created the removable Reverso Tourbillon clock for the Galibier, which may be worn on the wrist thanks to a cleverly designed leather strap.

'Galibier' is not just the name of one of the most difficult alpine passes along the Tour de France but, in its time, was a version of the four door Type 57 unequalled in sportiness and elegance.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy

>> Saturday, April 10, 2010

The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car built by Japanese manufacturer Subaru since 1989, and is available as a sedan or wagon. Part of the original design goals for the Legacy model was to provide Subaru a vehicle in which they could compete in the lucrative North American midsize market against competitors Honda Accord and Toyota CamryT. Higher performance variants of the Legacy are offered as competitive alternatives to compact executive cars such as the Audi A4,Alfa Romeo 159 and BMW 3 Series.

The Legacy also serves as Subaru's flagship car.In 1995, Subaru created a raised, crossover version of the Legacy wagon called the Legacy Outback. It is unique in its class for offering all wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy bears the name Liberty in Australia out of deference for Legacy Australia, a veterans' assistance organization. As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacies have been built since its 1989 introduction. Subaru Legacy (fifth generation) Production of the fifth generation Legacy began the last week of May 2009 at the Indiana location.

Dashboard

The 2010 Subaru Legacy was unveiled at 2009 New York Auto Show. According to the Subaru website in Japan, the Legacy was introduced in Japan on May 20, 2009. According to the Japanese site on Wikipedia the STi Legacy will continue production. The new for this generation Lineartronic Continuosly variable transmission is used internationally on the EJ25 2.5 L flat-4 engine and the EJ20 in some markets, with a 6-speed manual transmission also offered only in North America and Australia. The 2.5GT uses a turbocharger with a 6-speed manual transmission used exclusively in Japan and North America with Australia being able to choose between the 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission; vehicles identified as "3.6R" use the EZ36 flat-6 engine with a 5-speed SportShift conventional automatic transmission. The Lineartronic CVT transmission is also shared with the JDM-spec Subaru Exiqa on AWD models.

Interior Seat

The North American PZEV Legacy 2.5i continues to be available in all 50 states, unlike other manufacturers who only sell PZEV certified vehicles in states that have adopted California emission standards. Internationally, the EZ36 flat-6 engine is used in the Outback only, but is also available in the Legacy sedan in both North America and Australia. The Japan-spec vehicle has discontinued using the EJ20 engine, offering the EJ25 in both turbo and non-turbo versions. "SI-Drive" is standard equipment on all Japanese-spec vehicles, and both the Australian 2.5GT and the 3.6R sedan, but not in North America. SI-Drive is standard on the international Outback with the EZ36 except North America. The Legacy wagon is available as an Outback only in North America, whereas the wagon is available as both a Legacy and Outback in Japan, the UK, Australia, and Europe.

In the UK, only the wagon is offered, with engine choices limited to the Subaru EE20 turbodiesel or the EJ25. In Europe, the EJ20 is still offered in both the sedan and a wagon, alongside the EE20 turbodiesel and the EJ25. The EE20 turbodiesel is available in Australia in the Outback. The European and UK Legacy EE20 diesel, the EJ20 and the EJ25 gasoline engines are Euro 5 emission standard compliant. The side windows are no longer frameless, ending a Subaru tradition started with the first generation Leone in the early 1970s.

The “D” pillar on the wagon is no longer covered in glass, also ending a design tradition established with the first generation, borrowed from the Subaru XT. A center console mounted hand brake has been replaced with an electric handbrake switch installed on the dashboard. Stereo control and climate control buttons as well as the CVT gear selector are oriented to either left- or right-hand driving, meaning commonly used functions are placed closer to the driver, such as volume adjustment on the stereo, or the "Auto" function on the climate control unit.

Manual control of the CVT transmission is done by pulling the gear selector lever towards the driver. Bilstein struts are still offered in Japan, the UK, Europe and Australia as either standard or optional equipment based on trim packages offered in the specified markets except North America. G-Book, a vehicle telematics service, is offered optionally on all Legacies sold in Japan. This is the ninth Subaru vehicle to offer a CVT transmission; the first was the Subaru Justy (1987–1994), followed by the Subaru Rex (1987–1992), the Subaru Vivio (1992–1998), the Subaru Pleo (1998–current), the Subaru R1 coupe (2004–current), the Subaru R2 5-door hatchback (2003–current), the Subaru Sambar (1990–1995 only), and the Subaru Exiga starting September 2009. In 2009, a Subaru Legacy concept was designed to commemorate 20th anniversary of the model, reported to be the basis of the production version of the then upcoming fifth generation Subaru Legacy. The concept vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Performance enhancements The EZ series of flat-6 cylinder engines, used in current Legacy products, replaced the EGSeries found in the Subaru SVX. Subaru has produced high performance versions of the Legacy with a Bilstein suspension and tuned turbocharged engines equivalent to the homologized rally version WRX STI (generating 205 kW (275 hp) on manufacturer's figures for the 2.0 L equivalent engine with manual transmission). Recent 3.0 L engines move close to the 2.0 L turbo output and share the Bilstein suspension. 2.0 L-engined turbocharged models with the Bilstein suspension were named either the GT-B (for wagons), or Spec B, or RSK-B4 (for sedans). The new 2003 model moved many models to simply B4 or even GT in some countries. In Australia, the 2.5GT (SatNav) marks the top of the pile for the Legacy/Liberty range. In North America, early sporty models were known simply as the Sport Sedan and Touring Wagon. Later models were given the GT and GT Limited nomenclature. The 2006 Legacy model brought forth a limited run of 500 Spec B models. Starting in 2007 the Spec B became a regular production model (albeit a somewhat limited run). All Spec B models feature an improved suspension system by Bilstein, navigation system (making the Spec. B the sole MT Legacy to get one), exclusive (to the Spec B) interior, 18" wheels, and additional aesthetic modifications. 2006 Spec B models have a 5 speed manual transmission while 2007-on models have a 6-speed manual transmission. Another review by KC Colwell , Article from Car and Driver 2009 Magazine descripting : The previous generation Legacy sedan had standard all wheel drive and fairly zesty chassis, along with the enthusiast’ option of a high power turbo GT model. However, it suffered from weak fuel economy and a tight back seat.Indeed, the Legacy sacrificed practical corncerns for fun. The new, fifth generation AWD Legacy still available in base,GT,and R versions is larger than its predecessor in every dimension. Noteworthy is a 3.2 inch stretch in the wheelbase (now 108.3) and a lengthening of 1.4 inches (186.4). Interior space has been generously increased. Passenger volume is up 12 cubic feet, eight of it in the back, to 102.

Those rear seats have excellent thigh support, and there’s plenty of head and legroom, even for passengers well over six feet. With the space gain, though, comes roughly 65 pounds of added weight; it now maxes out at 3600 pounds. The same 170 hp flat four soldiers on as the base engine, though now it is hooked to a six speed manual or a cvt, both new. The six speed’s sloopy shifter disappointed us,but the CVT surprised us.It manages to keep the revs low when cruising;also, the golf cart lazy acceleration that is often associated with CVTs has been kept to a minimum. According to the car’s fuel economy gauge, the CVT delivers on the 31 mpg highway claim (the CVT is rated at 23 in the city). Powering the Legacy GT is a slightly different version of the turbocharged, 2.5 liter flat four found in the slice and dice Impreza WRX, making 265 horsepower in both cars.

Subaru has determined that people interested in the quick, turbocharged Legacy GT will not be interested in a slushbox,so it comes with a six speed manual only. The R model swaps the old 3.0 liter flat six for the Tribeca’s 3.6 liter flat six making 256 horses. In this case, a five speed automatic is the only transmission available. The three spoke steering wheel has a nicely weighted feel,is adjustable for both rake and reach to enhance driver comfort, and features excellent on center feel.Beneath the new body its most striking feature is the squared off fender arches is an overhauled chassis. With a strut type suspension in front and a new multilink setup out back, the mid size Legacy proves to be a smooth cruiser on the highway and a capable back road sweeper despite retaining a healthy amount of body roll. Our drive route featured some of the smoothest roads in North America , and they weren’t Stelvio Pass squiggly.Even so,this legacy will hustle down a two laner at the pace,or quicker, of a Mazda 6 or a Honda Accord. The new Legacy goes on sale as you read this. The 2.5 GT, our favorite , will run 28,690 us dollar, undercutting the less efficient and front wheel drive Honda Accord LX (21 mpg city, 30 highway) by 725 us dollar. That’s hardly a sacrifice. Vehicle Type : Front engine, 4 wheel drive, 5 passenger, 4 door sedan.

Best Price : 20,690 us dollar – 28,690 us dollar Engine : SOHC 16 valve 2.5 liter flat 4,170 hp,170 lb-ft; DOHC 24 valve 3.6 liter flat 6, 256 hp, 247 lb-ft; turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16 valve 2.5 liter flat 4, 265 hp,258 lb-ft. More review by: http://www.edmunds.com, tell us that the redesigned 2010 Subaru Legacy offers standard all-wheel drive and above-average performance in a significantly larger package. If you like the look of it, it's a solid choice.Standard all-wheel drive, sleek interior design, diverse engine and transmission choices, powerful turbocharged engine on 2.5GT trim. Polarizing styling, no automatic transmission available with the turbocharged engine, 3.6-liter engine's lackluster fuel economy. The 2010 Subaru Legacy has been fully redesigned. Highlights include a roomier and updated interior, more powerful engines and dramatic new styling.

2010 Subaru Legacy Vehicle Overview Introduction The new, fully redesigned 2010 Subaru Legacy is a stylistic departure from its predecessors, to put it mildly. Its steroidal fender flares are equal parts Mercedes-Benz S-Class and J.C. Whitney, and its large headlights and slablike front end wouldn't look out of place on a crossover SUV. While previous Legacy shapes ranged from inoffensive to downright sleek, this one is a bit more controversial. We hope consumers will warm to the Legacy's new skin, though, because underneath, there's a lot to like about Subaru's heavily updated midsize sedan.

As expected, every 2010 Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive, a feature that has helped to make Subaru a fixture in America's snowbelt. Also expected are the Legacy's significantly expanded dimensions, as the previous model was hampered by its relatively tight cabin. Following in the footsteps of the Honda Accord and Mazda 6, both of which plumped out with their latest redesigns, the new Legacy gains 3.3 inches in height, 3.5 inches in width and 3.2 inches of wheelbase compared to the 2009 Legacy. On the inside, this yields substantial gains in head-, shoulder-, hip- and legroom. Nonetheless, the car only grows by just 1.4 inches in overall length and gains about 50 more pounds in curb weight, so the Legacy's historically above-average maneuverability hasn't been overly compromised. Another Legacy hallmark in recent years has been its diverse array of powertrain choices, and the 2010 Legacy carries on this tradition as well.

The base 2.5-liter "boxer" (horizontally opposed) four-cylinder engine will be adequate for many buyers, but those with a greater need for speed will be heartened to find two optional engines -- a revised turbocharged version of the boxer-4 that promises to be the sporty pick of the bunch, and a new, smooth-running 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that packs a lot more punch than last year's 3.0-liter flat-6. With either of the upgraded power plants, the Legacy can be seen as a budget-priced alternative to premium all-wheel-drive sport sedans from Germany and Japan.

In addition to its larger cabin, distinctive powertrains and standard all-wheel drive, the 2010 Subaru Legacy features a modern interior that can be outfitted with a full range of electronic gadgetry for buyers so inclined. In the crowded midsize sedan segment, these traits should help set the Legacy apart. We'd still advise you to test-drive the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima and Volkswagen's CC and Passat, paying particular attention to interior design and feature availability. But as long as the Legacy's edgy new look doesn't rub you the wrong way, it should definitely be on your short list of family-oriented four-doors. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy is a five-passenger midsize sedan offered in base 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5GT Premium, 2.5GT Limited, 3.6R, 3.6R Premium and 3.6R Limited trim levels. The base 2.5i comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio controls, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, an electronic parking brake and a four-speaker stereo with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The 2.5i Premium trim steps up to 16-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an eight-way power driver seat and an auto up/down driver window.

The 2.5i Limited adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a four-way power passenger seat, an All Weather package (includes a windshield wiper de-icer, heated side mirrors and heated front seats), dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, Bluetooth and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The 2.5GT Premium starts with the 2.5i Premium's equipment and adds the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, performance tires, larger brakes a hood scoop and the All Weather package. The 2.5GT Limited tacks on the power passenger seat, automatic climate control and leather upholstery. The 3.6R starts with the base 2.5i's equipment and adds the 3.6-liter flat-6 engine and 17-inch alloy wheels. The 3.6R Premium adds the 2.5i Premium's extra features except for the wheels, which remain 17-inch alloys, and it also gets the All Weather package.

The 3.6R Limited has the same extras as the 2.5GT Limited. Many standard features on higher trim levels can be specified as options on lower trims. Exclusive to Limited models is an optional voice-activated navigation system that's bundled with an iPod/USB input, Bluetooth and streaming Bluetooth audio, and a back-up camera. A sunroof is a stand-alone option on all but the base 2.5i. Powertrains and Performance The all-wheel-drive 2010 Subaru Legacy offers no fewer than three engines and three transmissions. The base 2.5-liter horizontally opposed (a.k.a. "boxer") four-cylinder engine makes 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the base 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with manual shift control is optional on those models and standard on the 2.5i Limited. Legacy 2.5i models are also available with top-tier PZEV tailpipe emission certification. The 2.5GT models boast a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter four that cranks out 265 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. Notably, the 2.5GT is available only with a six-speed manual. The 3.6R models are powered by a 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that generates 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. A five-speed automatic is the only available transmission. EPA fuel economy estimates are at their best with the CVT-equipped 2.5i; you can expect 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway with this combo. Opting for the six-speed manual drops those numbers to 19/27 mpg. The Legacy 2.5GT and 3.6R both have a less impressive 18/25 mpg rating.

Safety Standard safety equipment on the Legacy includes antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the Legacy earned a top score of "Good" for its protection of occupants in both frontal-offset and side-impact collisions. Interior Design and Special Features The Legacy's interior design is sleek and sophisticated, but you better like silver paint, because the V-shaped center stack is covered with it. Though the interior plastics look upscale, most of them are hard to the touch and lack the more upscale feel found in models like the Ford Fusion and VW Passat.

A sporty three-spoke steering wheel hints at this Subaru's above-average athleticism. The seats are comfortable and the Legacy's newly enlarged dimensions pay dividends in passenger space, particularly in back where legroom increases by nearly 4 inches. Technophiles will appreciate the optional navigation system, which is part of a gadget suite that includes an iPod jack and streaming Bluetooth audio. Unfortunately, you have to ante up for the top-of-the-line Limited trim in order to activate this option. Trunk space is an average 14.7 cubic feet.

Driving Impressions Despite its pumped-up size, the 2010 Subaru Legacy is still one of the better-handling family sedans on the market, thanks to a willing chassis and tenacious all-wheel-drive traction. The ride is laudably smooth thanks in part to a new double-wishbone rear suspension. Drivers expecting the 2.5GT model to be a sleeper sport sedan will be disappointed, though, as it has the same soft suspension tuning as all other Legacys.

The base 2.5-liter engine won't elicit any grins, but its power is certainly adequate for most folks. Subaru's new CVT works notably well and is actually the recommended transmission here, as it provides ideal gearing for both fuel economy and acceleration when needed. The 2.5GT's turbocharged engine is much more of a thrill, though the mandatory manual transmission will limit its appeal. That leaves the new 3.6-liter flat-6 as the main draw for those wanting some punch. Thankfully, it's a big upgrade over last year's 3.0-liter engine, delivering snappy acceleration along with an enjoyable engine note that's vaguely similar to that of the Porsche 911.

The 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

>> Wednesday, April 7, 2010

The 2006 Monte Carlo (and the companion Impala sedan) was introduced at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show. The base engine was a 3.5 L V6 producing 210 hp (156 kW). The most notable news, though, was the SS model's use of the Generation IV small-block V8 — the first V8 since the 1988 model. The 5.3 L V8 produced 303 hp (226 kW), which raised some eyebrows considering it was being placed in a front wheel drive car.

The interior for 2006 was mildly redesigned. Chevrolet Monte Carlo draws on a rich NASCAR stock car racing legacy – the most successful nameplate in the sport’s history – to offer one of the industry’s only true midsize personal coupes. The vehicle has remained true to the roots of style and performance established at its introduction in 1970.

Dashboard Pics.

The final Monte Carlo off the production line will be retained by GM for their Heritage Center collection. The second-to-last Monte off the line, the last "saleable" unit, was auctioned off on August 15, at Manheim's Statesville A uto Auction in Statesville,North Carolina. The winning bid went to Fred Simon, owner of Simon Chevrolet in Woonsocket, RI where it is on display on the dealership floor for the public to enjoy. This unit was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the weekend of July 27–29 for the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. While there, it was signed by all the current Team Chevrolet drivers who were active in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Chevrolet gives its largest cars more power and revised styling for 2006. Impala is the sedan version of the Monte Carlo coupe. Both come in LS, LT 3.5, LT 3.9, LTZ, and sporty SS models. LS and LT 3.5 have a 211-hp V6, up 30 hp from 2005's base engine. LT 3.9 and LTZ models have a new 242-hp V6. SS models get a 303-hp V8 with GM's Active Fuel Management, which deactivates four cylinders while cruising to save fuel. All use a 4-speed automatic transmission. SS models have a sport suspension. All Impalas except SS are available with a front bench seat for six-passenger seating. SS Impalas and all Monte Carlos have front buckets. Impala comes with curtain side airbags. Monte Carlo offers only front side airbags. ABS and traction control are optional on LS and LT 3.5, standard otherwise. OnStar Assistance is standard, leather upholstery and remote engine start are options. A new family of premium-feature V-6 engines is available in LS, LT and LTZ models, including a 211-horsepower (157 kw) 3500 3.5L V-6 and an available 3900 3.9L V-6 that uses variable valve timing and variable intake technology to help deliver 242 horsepower (180 kw) and 242 lb.-ft. The Monte Carlo SS has a distinct front-end appearance, with a dual-split grille that has a black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The rear spoiler is unique, too, suggesting the purposefulness of NASCAR spoilers. Corvette-inspired bright exhaust outlets also are standard on the Monte Carlo SS. Inside, the seats have a cleaner, simpler and more tailored appearance. Uplevel, available Nuance leather-covered seating features premium deck seams around their perimeter and French seams on the center cushions. The seats also have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support that provide more comfort, especially during long drives. A revised cockpit-style instrument panel with a new instrument layout and control center stack is woven into ’06 models, along with a sportier shifter with chrome accents.
The Monte Carlo features premium materials throughout the interior and trunk area, including low-gloss trim and tight tolerances. Tight gaps and flush fitment throughout demonstrate quality and attention to detail. Comfort and convenience are paramount to coupe buyers and Monte Carlo delivers with: Available dual-zone climate control system with up to 12 degrees F temperature setting difference between the two front zones Available factory-installed remote vehicle start system with a 197-foot (60-meter) range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the vehicle prior to entry Easier-to-read, more informative gauge cluster and driver information center – with more than 50 alerts, depending on the vehicle’s equipment Standard easy-to-access, steering wheel-mounted cruise control buttons Steering wheel radio controls on uplevel models Available leather-trimmed, heated driver and front passenger seats A new family of audio systems also debuts on the ’06 Monte Carlo .
The three systems feature new, simple-to-operate radios that are compatible with the enhanced OnStar system. The base CD-radio includes a six-speaker system. An uplevel MP3/CD-radio is configured for XM Satellite Radio, with a two-line, 32-character reconfigurable display and the capability to select between AM, FM and XM stations without having to reset the frequency. An uplevel ICDX radio adds an in-dash six-CD changer. Monte Carlo also offers a premium Bose audio system. All radios include a standard auxiliary input for external devices, such as an iPod or MP3 player, to be played through the vehicle’s audio system. The input is located in the lower right corner of each radio.
Chassis and suspension A more robust front-end structure provides a firmer foundation to help reduce noise vibration and harshness (NVH). It also provides improved steering and handling performance. Fully boxed upper frame rail assemblies have a wider, deeper and structurally stronger upper front tie bar, with slight machining differences between V-6 and V-8 models to provide room for the 5.3L small-block V-8 engine.
Stronger ties between the upper and lower rails stiffen the front structure for improved ride and handling and a large, lower front-of-dash panel has been strengthened. It is constructed from Quiet Steel laminated steel, which consists of sound deadening material bonded between sheets of steel and reduces resonant sound from a “clanging” to a muted “thud.” A stiffer, extruded aluminum engine cradle is used, too, and contributes to a smoother ride with less vibration. The cradle’s lateral stiffness (at the steering joint) is increased with a new, one-piece machined rear cross member and new aluminum, load-bearing rear body mounts, which improve handling control. Models equipped with a V-6 engine have a two-point engine-mounting system, while V-8 models have a three-point mounting system. A power rack-and-pinion steering system is standard on all models, with the base LS model now sharing the same, responsive 13.3:1 steering ratio of uplevel models. All models also receive a quieter, improved performance power steering pump and fluid reservoirs.
The new system optimizes internal flow of the hydraulic steering fluid within both the pump and the reservoirs. At the front suspension, a MacPherson strut coil-over-spring independent front suspension with gas-charged four-valve struts and a stabilizer bar are used. Taller jounce bumpers in the front suspension help enhance stability and control. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged, four-valve struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. From these basic suspension designs, three separate suspension settings are available, each tuned to match the power and expected performance level of its respective model: FE2 (16-inch wheels): Standard on the base LS with the 3.5L V-6. It provides improved control over previous base models without compromising ride quality. Stiff, constant-rate front springs and variable-rate rear springs are used to provide higher roll rates. Up front, a stiffer torque strut design reduces NVH and helps provide a smoother, quieter ride. The package includes 16-inch wheels and P225/60R16 ALS (all-season) Goodyear Integrity radials, specifically developed to provide a quieter ride and increased fuel economy. A 10-mm (0.4-inch) wider track also is achieved, as the 16-inch wheels each are moved 5 mm outboard. FE2 (17-inch wheels): The FE2 suspension also is available with 17-inch wheels and tires for better high-speed control. This combination is standard with vehicles equipped with the 3.9L V-6. The 3.9L engine also receives more powertrain damping to help optimize ride quietness, smoothness and handling. P225/55R17 AL2 (touring) Goodyear Eagle LS2 radials are partnered with the 17-inch aluminum wheels, providing greater handling capability and more stability during tighter turns. FE4 (SS model): Monte Carlo SS comes with the FE4 suspension, which is tuned to provide a sporty ride that complements the 5.3L small-block V-8’s performance. It offers increased stiffness and ride control, with reduced body lean and greater high-speed stability. The 34-mm hollow front stabilizer bar and 18-mm solid rear stabilizer bar are larger in diameter than the bars of the two FE2 suspension settings, providing increased roll control. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels with W-rated P235/50R18 AL3 Goodyear Eagle RS-A performance tires are included with the FE4 suspension. Safety and crash avoidance The Monte Carlo has standard dual-stage frontal air bags and offers new optional side-impact (seat-mounted) air bags, which help optimize head and torso protection for the driver and front passenger. The list of other standard and available safety features includes: Use of high-strength steel in the engine compartment, torque box and rocker panels reinforces the structure to protect against front and side impacts An improved four-wheel-disc brake system with all-new front brakes, improved rear brakes and increased brake boost. The system provides more stopping power and reduced stopping distances, compared to previous models, as well as smoother and quieter performance, longer pad life, and more resistance to brake pulsation. A new ABS system is standard on all trim levels except the base model. ABS helps provide improved steering control while preventing wheel lock-up during braking. It also includes Electronic brake force distribution, which helps provide optimum braking regardless of load, traction or braking speed. An available engine- and brake-managed full-function traction control system works with the ABS system to help ensure stable acceleration on a variety of road conditions. Pretensioners are standard on the front safety belts, which help minimize forward movement during a frontal collision and new, more effective load-limiting retractors. The retractors have more “take-up” force, cinching the belt more tightly. Three-point safety belts for all seating positions. LATCH (Lower Anchors & Tethers for CHildren) child seat attachment system is included in all second row seating positions. Revised head protection from impacts to the upper interior structure is provided by energy-absorbing material placed strategically along the roof rails behind the A-, B- and C-pillars. Strengthened front seat structure. Headlamps that provide more down-the-road visibility than previous models, with higher-intensity bulbs and a new four-bulb burn configuration in which the low beams stay on when the high beam is activated. Tire Pressure Monitoring System is standard on models equipped with 17- and 18-inch wheels. An upgraded standard remote keyless entry (RKE) system now provides a second function for the red panic button. Drivers can use the button to locate their cars, without sounding the panic alarm. OnStar-equipped Monte Carlo models feature OnStar dual-mode (analog-digital) equipment. OnStar’s digital equipment also includes enhanced hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada . Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Hands-Free Calling that allows drivers to make and receive voice-activated phone calls using an externally mounted antenna for greater reception. The OnStar service standard on the 2006 Monte Carlo includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to the participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate live-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster.
